DIDACTIC UNIT 13 - SESSION 2 SESSION 2
A)
1-Specific aim /objective: to revise and practise infinitives and gerunds,
forms and functions; to revise and practise 'used to', 'be used to', 'get
used to', their uses and differences; some verbs + inf/gerund and their
change of meaning; to learn specific vocabulary related to the topic.
2- Contents: revision of the above grammatical items; inferring rules from
examples and practice; vocabulary work on home and housing. B) Main focus: GRAMMAR -1 + VOCABULARY C) Development and procedure:
1. Warm-up and homework correction: general questions to set students in
the mood; then homework of previous day is checked and commented on orally
(WhC). *
2. Anticipated Problem-Grammar Presentation: revision of uses and forms of
infinitives and gerunds, and pronunciation; 'used to', 'be used to', 'get
used to' - meaning and uses; remind them of their pronunciation too; uses
of some verbs +inf/-ing and the change of meaning operated; examples are
written on the board - students must understand their uses and functions,
and get pronunciation right
Teacher goes through explanations with students (WhC). 3. Practice:
Activity 1. Students are told to explain the uses of either form in
sentences (ex. 1) (PW).Now, in ex. 2, they must complete each sentence with
right form of verbs in brackets (PW).
Some verbs with either inf or -ing: ex. 1 (awareness raising and
explanation) and 2 (sentence completion and practise (PW)
'Used to', 'be used to', 'get used to': explanation of uses (Activity 5)
and practice (Activity 6) text completion with verbs learnt) (PW)
WhC grouping variation is used for correction in plenary mini-sessions.
Word work: vocabulary about the home. Students match words in box with
definitions (Activity 7), and complete sentences with those words
(Activity 8) (PW; WhC for check-up).
Homework: students are asked to write eight questions containing inf/-ing;
they will ask them to their partners in the following class.
D) Assessment & Evaluation:
Formative: teacher's direct observation; monitoring students' work in class
as they perform the activities. Teacher takes it down in his class diary
and in students' progress record. This will help him to re-arrange his
teaching planning.
Self-evaluation of students in last 5 minutes: reflection of what they have
done, what they have learnt difficulties they have experienced in doing
tasks. It is advisable to record them in their diaries (learner's diary).
E) Materials and resources needed:
Copies of exercises from several updated textbooks, pp. 3, 4 and 5 of block
of tasks and activities. They also cater for diversity: different blocks
are provided for extra practice, reinforcement and remedial work (weak
students) and extension activities (for the more able) if needed.
