Course Description:
Intermediate Korean 202 is a continuation of Intermediate Korean 201. The
course focuses on expansion of conversational skills. It also aims to
deepen understanding of Korean culture and society through reading and
video viewing. At the end of the course, students will be able to apply
grammatical structures and vocabulary items creatively to their own
speaking and writing. In addition, the course continues to introduce
students to basic Chinese characters ??(Every Mondays and Thursdays).

Evaluation:
2 Midterms: 20%
Final Exam: 20%
Quizzes: 20% (vocabulary quizzes, lesson quizzes, ?? quizzes)
Homework: 10%
Oral Exams:5% (oral exam 1: video recording, oral exam 2: one-on-one
interview)
2 Short essays: 5% (2 pages, typed, 12 fonts, double-spaced, 1 inch
margin) Attendance: 5 %
Language Lab: 5% (30 minute weekly attendance)
Individual Presentation & Skit: 10%
Course Requirements:
1) You are expected to attend every class and arrive on time. Poor
attendance, frequent lateness and early departure will affect your
grade. If your absences exceed 6 classes, no passing grade will be
given. If your absences exceed 3 classes, you will not receive an A
regardless of your semester scores. 3 late arrivals equal one absence.
2) Laptops, MP3 players and cellular phones must be turned off during
class. You may not leave the classroom during class without the
instructor's permission.
3) You should have done homework assignments before class to participate
fully in the classroom activities. Late homework will not be accepted
without the instructor's permission. There will be no make-up for a
missed quiz or test. Missing a quiz or test is the equivalent of a
zero (0).
4) Weekly lab work is required. Each visit must be at least 30 minutes
long. You must submit your lab work upon the completion of each
lesson.
(5) You will be asked to visit the Sakai course site for listening
and grammar exercises, and homework assignments on a regular basis.

Additional information for Intermediate Korean (574:202:01)

Homework (10%):
1) Workbook HW: 1. Each HW has due dates (refer to syllabus). Late
submissions will cause deduction on HW grade.

2. Re-do (correction) submission: Students are required to correct their
WB homework and re-submit them. Submission later than the due date will be
the equivalent of a zero (0).



2) Free writing HW: Students are required to submit writing HW. The HW
must be always done in the Free writing HW packet. (Single paper will
not be accepted).

No limitation in topic. No grammar correction or evaluation will be done.
As long as you have sufficient amount (At least 300 squares) and what you
want to say is understandable, you will get a full score for the single
writing HW.

Throughout the semester students are required to submit at least 15 writing
HWs to get full credit. (6 before Midterm 1, 5 before Midterm 2 and 4
before Finals) No more than 2 essays per week will be accepted.

Presentation & Skit (10 %):
1) Presentation topic: Same as the text book topic. (From L9 to L15)

3-4 persons will share the same theme. However, the topic should be
different.

For example, L8 is about ?? ??. The theme is ??or ?? ?? and topic can
be as following: '??? ?? ??? ??? ?? ??', '?? ?? ??', '?? ??? ?? ??'
and etc. Students with the same theme should arrange the topic in
advance to have different ones for each person.

The topic should be confirmed by instructor in advance.

2) How long: 5 mins maximum. You can use bullet pointed memo, but not
script to read while you are presenting.

3) PPT: Students are required to make a power point slides (or
equivalent) for their presentation. Do not read what you wrote in your
PPT. Students are required to submit their first draft of slides one
week before the presentation. Instructor will check grammar, vocab.
