PART 2 EXAM PRACTICE (including MODEL TRANSLATIONS) PUNCTUATION EXERCISES TRANSLATION COURSE MATERIALS The introductory lesson is designed to test the student's capacity as a non
native speaker, to evaluate the quality of a translation from Italian into
English, and so to highlight the difficulties involved in attempting to
translate from one's own language into a foreign language. The object of
the course is thus to provide students with practical, "damage limitation"
techniques that will enable them to produce functional texts in English
that are acceptable to a native speaker. The 10 main topics have been chosen to cover areas in which students could
potentially be working in the future and be required to translate (e.g.
publishing, event promotion). Materials for 10 areas are provided, although
time constraints may mean that not all are covered. These materials may be
further supplemented by additional materials of the teacher's choice. The topic materials begin with a brief introduction to the new text type
dealt with and usually include a model translation, which illustrates the
specific register, style and lexical choices required and will form the
basis for class analysis and discussion. A practice text/s to be translated in class or as a homework assignment
completes each topic. NB The texts set for annual exam will be related to TOPICS 1, 2, 3, 5, 6,
8 and 10 (part 1). REFERENCE MATERIALS LM 37/LM 94 TTRANSLATION is a workshop based course where practical
techniques are developed by observation of translated texts, practice in
translating related texts and correction and comparison of student
production. Translation approaches, difficulties and techniques are
presented and explained as they arise.
For a theoretical approach to the work of translation, plus extensive
terminology (as well as many excellent examples of translation from and
into English) we recommend: Language to Language Christopher Taylor (Cambridge University Press) especially

NB The texts set for annual exam will be related to TOPICS 1, 2, 3, 5, 6,
7 and 10. 3. Use the practice texts in each topic as translation exercises (it is
not necessary to translate the whole text).
4. Have your work corrected by a native speaker teacher. It is NOT
possible to " practise"
translation without having your work corrected. If you cannot attend
the LM Translation ricevimento (see website for times and
dates) you must find another solution.
TRANSLATION INTO L2: A PRACTICAL GUIDE
STAGE 1: Comprehension and analysis of the source text
Every text is produced by a writer, is directed at his/her intended
reader, and has its own
specific content, function (to entertain, inform, convince etc), style
and tone. The translator must be first an attentive reader, identifying
the field of reference, purpose, register, in general the impact of the
source text on the Italian speaking reader. The translator as reader
then becomes the writer of the new text in English, which should have the
same impact (as far as humanly possible) on the English speaking reader.
This means that the translator must try to read his/her own text from the
point of view of the new readers trying to assess their comprehension of
and reaction to the translation.
Herein lies the problem for translators into a language that is not their
own: the reader of the target text has a better knowledge of the target
language than the non native speaker, and has a perfect grasp of the
lexis (specific, general, idiomatic), structure, style and register
required for the text he/she is reading. Analysis of the text includes
the process of deciding which of these elements must be modified in the
transition from Italian to English. Failure to adapt the source text to
the demands of the new language could mean that the target reader will
find the text strange and difficult to understand, or, in the worst
cases, simply comical.
Rule no.1 for translators into L2: you must not make your reader laugh! EXAMPLE:
From LM exam May 2012
Sotto le lenzuola Frette hanno dormito papi, re, rampolli delle famiglie
aristocratiche di tutta Europa o i viaggiatori del Titanic e dell'Oriente
Express. Under Frette sheets slept popes, kings, members of aristocratic
families and even the passengers on the Titanic and on the Orient Express.
The image produced in the translation is slightly bizarre for the native
speaker: these people slept on top of the mattress with two layers of
Frette sheets over them? In English we sleep between sheets, not under
sheets.
A competent translator avoided the whole preposition dilemma
Their sheets were on the beds of popes, kings, members of aristocratic
families and even of the passengers on the Titanic and on the Orient
Express.
STAGE 2: CONSTRUCTING A NEW TEXT A. LEXIS
Field specific
Field specific lexis has a precise reference to a technical field and thus
has only one correct translation.
EXAMPLE (Topic 1). Il Viaggio della Fiamma del Sapere XXIII Universiade
Invernale di Torino 2007
The lexical field is International Games. Technical terms in Italian:
torcia/ fiaccola, tedoforo, staffetta dei tedofori. Translation: torch,
torch bearer, torch relay General
The language supporting and connecting the specific content usually offers
a range of translation options. This can be seen from the model exam
translations where you can find three or more alternatives offered. The
lexical choice must express the meaning and respect the register needed for
the target text. Remember that the strict rule about not repeating a word
(especially a noun) in a formal Italian text (which leads to an often
obsessive hunt for synonyms) does NOT exist in English. Particularly for an
L2 translator. Much better to repeat a correct word than to replace it with
a supposed synonym: you run a high risk of error or of creating confusion. EXAMPLE (exam May 2011): In this text the only specific lexis is coffee
maker for caffettiere.
... e permette all'azienda, grazie anche all'ambizione del figlio Renato,
di affermarsi immediatamente tra i principali produttori italiani di
caffettiere.
Thanks to this new coffee maker, together with // combined with //the
ambitions // the ambitious approach // of Alfonso's son Renato, Bialetti
soon became one of the leading manufacturers of coffee makers in Italy.
Dictionary Use
In general your method should be to consult the bi-lingual dictionary for
suggested meanings in English and then to check these in the mono-lingual
dictionary to establish which option fits the context and register of the
text you are working on. Examples in the mono-linguals are carefully chosen
to clarify meaning and to suggest the context and register where words
would be appropriate. Be guided by the mono-lingual, especially before you
use a word you have found in the bi-lingual that is unfamiliar to you. This
will also solve the problem of divergency, that is when one word in the
original language has a number of translation options.
