1. - COURSE DESCRIPTION
Language 097 (English Structure) is designed to build on the knowledge
of English that the students will bring to the class. It is the first
of two "bridge" courses, intended to help non-native English speakers
make the transition to using English as a primary language in an
academic setting. During class, we will examine English Grammar
through lectures, discussions, exercises, writing, and editing.
Homework will consist of supplementary exercises. Quizzes and
examinations will test your practical ability.


2. OBJECTIVES
a. GENERAL
. The general objective of this course is to reinforce and expand
knowledge of the grammatical structure of English to be used as a
tool for editing written work. The specific Objectives are the
following:
. To accurately use English grammar structures and be conversant in
the meta-language of grammar
. To identify parts of speech in a sentence
. To foster independence in recognizing grammatical errors and self-
correcting in speaking and writing through ability to use meta-
language
. To strengthen their learning by comparing and contrasting English
grammar with their native one
. To understand how grammar works and be able to apply it
accurately and fluently
