UNIT 1
Heat in the Earth
OBJECTIVES Throughout this unit, the student will be able to achieve the following
points: > Read a poster about the features of a diary.
> Learn vocabulary about volcanoes and volcanic features.
> Understand diary entries and answer oral questions about them.
> Study and practise the present continuous with future meaning.
> Practise the structure What a / an ... ! What ... !
> Read a text about Iceland and answer multiple choice, deductive and
personal response questions.
> Practise vocabulary using dictionaries to check definitions.
> Listen to a conversation, think of their own ideas and hold a short
conversation in pairs.
> Listen to and practice the pronunciation of plurals of words ending

> Understand and sing a short song.
> Write two diary entries independently, practising vocabulary.
> Listen to a narrative and complete dialogue for the story, practicing
vocabulary about nature and wildlife.

- Listen and read a dialogue about Switzerland.
- Listen and say some words practising the pronunciation of plurals of
words ending o.
- Listen and sing a song so as to keep practising the pronunciation of
plurals of words.
- Look, listen and read the story Kingfisher Valley - Part 1 and discuss
it.
Speaking - Look at a poster about Heat in the Earth and discuss it.
- Ask and answer questions practising the present continuous with future
meaning.
- Play Word races.
- Look at some pictures and ask and answer questions about what some
children are going to do tomorrow.
- Talk with their friends saying what they are doing tomorrow.
- Complete the Let's talk section using expressions with What ... !
- Play Verb tenses.
- Play Look, cover, write, check.
- Look at some pictures about a text and talk about them.
Reading
- Read a text about The land of fire and ice and choose the correct
endings in some sentences.
- Think about their answers to some questions about a text on Iceland.
- Read some sentences and say when some things happened, writing the
day.
- Match some phrases to the correct pictures.
- Read a grammar note about the present continuous with future meaning.
- Read an explanation about the difference between proper nouns and
abstract nouns.

Writing - Choose the best words to complete sentences about a text on Iceland.
