Catalog Description: The goal of the elementary Spanish language program is
to enable students to attain a suitable level of communicative proficiency
in speaking, listening, writing and reading skills.

Course Objectives:
1. Students will learn and memorize vocabulary and verb forms to become
acquainted with the Spanish Language.
2. Students will be able to have every opportunity in class and at home
to practice what we are studying at the moment.
3. Student will be able to learn about Hispanic countries to have a
better understanding of the cultural background.
4. Students will learn to write using the vocabulary and verb forms
learned, at the same time to read, speak and listen to conversation in
the form attain at this level.

Course Requirement:
Attendance Policy: Students are required to follow the University
Undergraduate Student Attendance Policy. Roll will be taken at each class
meeting. In the event of an absence, the student is responsible for any
work assigned. Please make sure you have a valid excuse to present to the
instructor (medical, obituary, work note, etc...) Inclement weather policy
is the stated also by the University Policy. Important Dates: Last day to
drop with W November 18th, 2016.





Classroom rules. In order to create a pleasant and professional atmosphere,
students must regard all of the following directions:
. Treat each other with courtesy and respect.
. Arrive to class on time.
. No eating in the classroom.
. Laptops, ipods and other personal electronics should NOT be used
during class.
. Make sure your cell phones are turned off during class including text
messaging or receiving calls.
. Avoid non-class-related activities (e.g., reading the newspaper) or
distracting activities (e.g., pencil or foot tapping).
. Hats or caps should be removed while in class.


GRADING BREAKDOWN & SCALE:

The course grade will be determined as follows:

Homework 15%
Participation, Tutors & Attendance 10%
4 Quizzes 10%
4 Ch. Exams + Final Exam 30%
2 Compositions 10%
4 Conversation Days 10%
1 Oral Presentation 10 %
Final Oral Exam 5 %

Grades: You should keep all returned, graded work until you receive your
final grade. It is not possible to earn extra credit in any way in this
class. There is no make-up work allowed without university excuse.

HOMEWORK INCLUDING PRONUNCIATION ACTIVITIES (15%): For homework you will
be expected to memorize vocabulary and verb forms and complete assignments
given to you on the WEBSAM assigned by the instructor. The homework online
will be placed every week covering the items seen in class for further
exercises. Homework must be completed online and on the due date and BEFORE
CLASS! as the website automatically removes them when it has expired. MAKE
SURE YOU DO THIS HOMEWORK - YOUR OVERALL GRADE WILL BE AFFECTED. There may
be some assignments in the computer homework that will correspond to
pronunciation. These assignments are to be done on the due date and will
be graded.

Typing your answers. Since the WHS is case sensitive it is important to
note that the student answers must match the correct answers exactly in
terms of upper-case (capital) and lower-case (small) letters. All spaces
and punctuation marks must also have the appropriate accent marks and
special letters (see below). When entering written answers in an exercise,
the responses will be marked correct only if the strings of letters,
spaces, and punctuation marks in the student answers are identical with the
correct answers. When you get an answer wrong, compare your answers with
the answers provided by the WHS to make sure that you didn't forget to
write an accent mark, or make another type of spelling mistake. Note:
There is no limit to the number of times a student can submit solutions to
a particular assignment. Spanish accents and special letters. When writing
in the answers in Spanish you will have to include the necessary Spanish
accent marks. If you don't know how to enter accent marks you can also
consult the following page to change the settings of your computer:
http://www.studyspanish.com/accents/typing.htm. Alternatively, you can also
copy and paste each letter that has already the accent mark.

PARTICIPATION/TUTORS/ATTENDANCE (10%): Participation in class is very
important. It will enable you to practice listening and speaking exercises
in class. The more you participate the better you will get in
understanding Spanish. Also, you will be required to meet with a Spanish
tutor in the writing center two times per month in which you will have
pronunciation practice skills. (This will be part of your participation
grade.) There will be a list given at the beginning of the semester with
the homework assigned and a copy will be placed on TigerNet for you to have
your tutor sign when completed. It will be picked up at the end of every
month. This grade will also be calculated according to your attendance and
willingness to participate in classroom activities (individual and group
work).

Attendance. Because group work and oral discussion are central activities
in the class, attendance is mandatory. In accordance with the University
Undergraduate Student Attendance Policy, no more than four (4) absences
will be allowed for this course. Absences in excess of this number of days
will result in an F for the course. Note: students will not be penalized
for absences excused by Campbellsville University; however, it is the
student's responsibility to notify the professor in advance of the excused
absence. It is also the student's responsibility to ensure that all
assignments are submitted on due dates, regardless of date(s) of absences.
Work can only be made up when the student's absence is excused. Makeup work
due to an excused absence must be completed and turned in within a week of
the original assignment's due date.
