I. Course Description
English for Professional Track (EPT) is a multi-English skill ESP (English
for Specific Purposes) course aimed at raising the standard of English
proficiency within the students' major areas: School of Business Management
and Economics; School of Natural Sciences and Engineering; School of
Humanities and Social Sciences; School of Arts and Sport Sciences; and
School of Medicine, Pharmacy & Nursing. EPT: Business Administration and
Economics aims to provide students who major in Business Administration and
Economics with the linguistic and functional tools necessary to be
successful in the modern work place. Changing trends towards globalization
make it essential that students possess a confident command of English and
have competencies to carry out work-based tasks in their major-specific
field. Based on a needs analysis of Business Administration and Economics
students, the course approaches popular student-centered and contemporary
international topics, including career changes, overseas relocations,
business partnerships, product design, quality management, financial
services (banking & insurances), IT-fused business consulting, and
innovation of global enterprises, while adding features of video clips (on
DVD-ROM and EPT website) linked with each topic. These are met firstly by
providing a balanced approach to the four key skills of (1)speaking,
(2)listening, (3)reading, and (4)writing. Secondly, there is a focus on
equipping students with the lexical and grammatical knowledge unique to
their chosen area of specialization, and providing experiential linguistic
training in areas related to their major, such as meetings, presentations
and interviews.
II. Course Goals
The main goal of this course is for Business Administration and Economics
students to increase all 4 skills of English ability through goal-
orientated activities in class. On successful completion of the course
students will have:
. Gained confidence through experience of communicating with peers and
the language instructor in English. This will apply to both general
subject areas and on specific topics related to business
administration and economics.
. Enhanced their competency in each of the four core skills of speaking,
listening, reading and writing.
. Developed strategies necessary to understanding and being understood
in an EIL (English as an International Language) context for the
modern business world.
. Acquired key vocabulary needed in order to successfully communicate in
a number of business situations.
. Gained a greater understanding of important grammatical structures,
and be able to use them flexibly.
. Developed key work skills such as emailing, conducting team meetings,
making arrangements, managing time, preparing for job interviews and
making presentations; and become familiar with terminology used
within those skills.

in documents to verify their absence.
. Texting or other inappropriate phone use is NOT allowed in class.

. Extra assignments to increase grade are NOT allowed.
V. Mid-term Written Exam
. Test covers: speaking, reading, vocabulary, grammar, listening, etc.
from textbook (all chapters from syllabus), and all assignments
including video materials from Week 1 to Week 7.

from textbook (all chapters from syllabus), and all assignments
including video materials from Week 9 to Week 15.

VII. Discretionary Evaluation
. Major-related (Individual or Group) Activity at the discretion of the
professor in charge
. Topic: International Conference, Olympics, Olympiad, Food Industry
Expo, Film Festival, Auto Show, Talk Concert, Music Concert, Art
Exhibition, Fashion Show, World's Fair, News Reporting, IT Exhibition,
New Product Show, Museum Brochure, etc.
. 20% of final grade
. Test place: classroom
. Test date: each Week or Week 14-15
VIII. Participation
. ?Homework assignments, ?In-Class Activities, ?presentation, etc. at
the discretion of the professor in charge
. 10% of final grade
. Students' active participation is strongly encouraged and will be
graded in this course.
IX. Self Study - Students are expected to study at home from the
International Express Intermediate text book, the accompanying DVD-ROM, and
the EPT website (http://eptbae.yolasite.com).

. There will be 2 pop quizzes during the semester at the discretion of
the professor in charge:
Pop Quiz 1 will be given before Week 8 (5% of final grade).
Pop Quiz 2 will be given before Week 16 (5% of final grade).
