COURSE OBJECTIVES

Elementary Spanish I is a course that allows beginning language learners to
hear Spanish and experience its cultural diversity while incorporating
technology to enhance language skills. The text, Aventuras, embraces a
communicative approach, incorporates culture, through community and
connections, and introduces students to authentic language material
(realia) and literary pieces from various Spanish speaking countries.

All four skills involved in learning a foreign language (listening,
speaking, reading and writing) will be integrated into the course work and
evaluations. The average student who completes SPN 1121 can expect to (1)
understand most Spanish spoken at a slower than normal pace and some
Spanish spoken at a normal pace; (2) answer and ask questions on a variety
of everyday topics, describe people and places, and narrate mostly in the
present tense and some in the past tense; and (3) read almost any simple
Spanish text.

This semester, we will focus on the following linguistic themes:

Lección 1: greetings, farewells, expressions of courtesy, identifying
yourself and others, and telling time.
Lección 2: words related to people, places and classes at the university
Lección 3: words related to family and professions
Lección 4: pastimes and sports; places in the city

The grammatical scope is:

Lección 1: nouns and articles, numbers 0-30, present tense, ser, subject
pronouns, telling time
Lección 2: present tense -ar verbs, forming questions, estar, and numbers
31-100
Lección 3: descriptive adjectives, possessive adjectives, present tense of
-er/ir verbs, tener and venir
Lección 4: ir, stem changing verbs, verbs with irregular yo forms

The cultural focus includes:

Lección 1: greetings: verbal and non verbal
Lección 2: choosing a major, studying in Hispanic countries
Lección 3: the Hispanic concept of family
Lección 4: soccer

SPECIAL NOTE: This is an BLENDED course. This means that students will
complete online assignments in lieu of actual classtime. Students are
expected to be able to send and receive email, and to send and open
attachments. Student must be able to use an online voice board tool, and
complete exercises in Vista Supersite. (online learning platform).

Other special equipment:

You will need a microphone and speakers for your computer or a
microphone/headset combination.

If you can't not use the Supersite Recording Tool or the Supersite from
your home computer, this does not excuse you from these activities. You
will need to find a computer that can handle this technology and/or use a
computer on one of IRSC's campuses.

The supersite is IPad compatible.

HOW YOUR GRADE IS DETERMINED IN THIS COURSE:

Your grade for this course will consist of four elements:

(1) Unit tests
40%
(2) Supersite activities
25%
(3) Oral Assessments/quizzes
15%
(4) Daily Grade/participation
20%

SCALE FOR FINAL GRADE:

90-100 A
89. B
79. C
69. D
59. F

UNIT TESTS: 40%

You will have four Unit Tests. These tests together will count as 40% of
your total grade.

Unit Test Dates: Test 1 Lección 1 Sep 15
Test 2 Lección 2 Oct 6
Test 3 Lección 3 Nov 3
Test 4 Lección 4 Dec 8

. The Unit Tests will be similar to the activities you will do on the
Vista Supersite.

. To prepare for the Unit tests, there is a folder on Blackboard with an
analysis of materials to be tested for each lección.

. We will have class after each test. Therefore, for any reason, you
leave after the test, you will NOT be counted present in class.

Missing a test: Students must contact instructor immediately.
Students must have a valid excuse for missing the test. If a make-up
test is granted, it will not be the same test taken in class. All
makeup tests will be taken in the ASC labs. Students will have one
week to make up test if granted an extension.

DAILY GRADE/PARTICIPATION 20%

Active participation is key to learning a language. Since Aventuras is a
communicative approach to language learning, students will be expected to
actively engage in class activities, whether they are in a group or pair
setting.

Regular attendance is key to success in this class. This class meets once a
week, so you are expected to be present, participating and prepared.
Students are expected to complete outside class assignments and be ready to
discuss topics and/or review activities for the next class.

Students who arrive late, leave early, step out for long periods of time,
will receive a reduction in their daily grade proportionate to the time
missed.

We will have class after each test. Therefore, for any reason, you leave
after the test, you will NOT be counted present in class

I understand emergencies arise, in that case, regardless of reason for
absence, I will drop 1 daily grade for all students!

Help tab on Supersite contains loads of tutorials and FAQ.

ASSIGNMENT ATTEMPTS:

Most assignments have unlimited attempts with the exception of the oral
quiz, which is only 1. Accent marks are a part of the language and will be
counted. Please be careful when spelling out words. Be sure to use words
from the text. I realize there are many synonyms in Spanish based on
regionalisms, but the Supersite will expect you to use vocabulary from the
text.

On your student calendar, you will see an average amount of work assigned.
Please DO NOT wait until the last minute to complete these Supersite
activities. They are designed to pace yourself through the Lección and
prepare you for the exam.

VISTA HIGHER LEARNING CALENDAR

There is a tab for you to see the number of assignments due on the
Supersite and their due dates. It will also give you the average amount of
time to complete them. Remember, this is to complete them, not learn the
material. Do not wait until the last minute to complete these
assignments. I will not accept procrastination as an excuse. Also, if
your computer is unable to handle the Vista Supersite, you must find a
computer on one of our IRSC campuses.
